St. Eugene’s Church Restoration Project Underway

A new c. £1m contract has been awarded to undertake restoration work at St. Eugene’s Church, Newtownstewart, Co. Tyrone. The historic Church, which was constructed in 1785, is a Grade B-listed building. The restoration project, which is being undertaken by QMAC Construction, under the direction of F.M. Corr and Associates Chartered Architects, includes essential work to the roof, services, and the renewal of the fabric of the building. Trade packages include mechanical, electrical, stonework, flooring, roofing, joinery, painting, plastering, specialist timber treatment, structural and timber works at the belfry, as well as copper and other works to the spire and the bell. Work commenced on site in January.

On 14th April, three groups of students from South West College, who are undertaking courses in joinery, brickwork, and plastering, attended a site visit. The event involved a presentation by Peter Gallagher, Conservation Architect at F.M. Corr and Associates Chartered Architects, which focused on the heritage aspects of the project, followed by a guided tour.

 

The restoration of St. Eugene’s Church has received a grant from The National Lottery Heritage Fund.
